Regional Deals
What's the plan for growth?
Growth is coming, whether we like it or not. But instead of reacting to it, I’m choosing to plan for it. That’s where our community investment plan comes in, also known as Regional Deals.
This plan, called Regional Deals, is a smarter way to fund the infrastructure we need. It’s a partnership between Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC), Central Otago District Council (CODC), and Otago Regional Council (ORC), working together to secure long-term funding from central government.
It provides us with a funding model that allows us to access long-term loans, so that burden of cost doesn’t fall solely on today’s ratepayers.
What does it mean for you?
- Better healthcare and education: Private investment supporting public services.
- Affordable housing: Families can stay close and live well.
- Transport upgrades: To keep our district moving.
- Energy resilience: Ensuring we’re ready for the future.
- Economic diversification: More jobs in tech, science, film and beyond.
- Visitor levies: Tourists help fund the services they use.
Why it matters
This isn’t just about infrastructure - it’s about quality of life. It’s about making sure grandparents don’t have to leave the district for healthcare, our kids can study and work locally when they leave high school, and families have more money left over at the end of the week.
I don’t believe we can bury our heads in the sand, growth in this region is inevitable. Instead, I’m planning boldly, partnering wisely, and building a district that works for everyone.
This work is already underway
Regional Deals isn't an idea or a plan, it's already happening.
The councils are actively working together to secure long-term funding and negotiate with central government. These conversations are in motion, and the relationships are established. Changing leadership now would mean we lose momentum.
We need to stick with leadership that:
- Knows the terrain: Understands the district’s needs and growth projections.
- Has the relationships: Connections to central government, neighbouring councils, and key stakeholders.
- Has momentum: Plans are already in progress and funding discussions are underway.
This is about keeping the district moving forward. The work is too important and the opportunity too close to risk losing ground.
